California University of Pennsylvania senior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week after leading the Vulcans to a 4-0 record last week at their home PSAC Crossover Tournament, announced the league office on Tuesday. After throwing for 262 yards and five touchdowns, quarterback Josh Portis was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Offensive Player of the Week Sunday, an award given weekly to the standout performer in the West each week.

Currently, Portis ranks fourth in the PSAC in both total offense and pass efficiency; he also ranks second on the team with 148 rushing yards; Freddie Bacco leads the team with 235 yards on the ground.

Portis follows in the footsteps of former quarterback Kevin McCabe, who won three PSAC West Player of the Week awards last year (September 27, October 11, November 8).

A two-time All-PSAC West selection, Nist connected for 44 kills and averaged a team-best 3.38 kills and 4.00 digs per set, while hitting at a .337 clip in the first week of PSAC play for the Vulcans. The senior helped Cal U improve to 12-4 overall this year as she surpassed the 1,500-career kill and 1,200-career dig milestones over the weekend. Nist and former Cal U standout Katie Barker (2002-05) are the only two players in school history to reach both 1,500 kills and 1,200 digs in a career.

In a 3-0 victory over East Stroudsburg, she posted 11 kills on .578 hitting and added 14 digs. Nist then registered an 18-kill, 14-dig performance against Lock Haven in a rematch of last year’s PSAC Championship. The former Rockwood standout collected another double-double on Saturday against Millersville, finishing with 11 kills and 17 digs.

For the season, Nist leads the team and ranks fourth in the PSAC with 3.39 kills per set. She also is second on the Vulcans with 3.08 digs and 0.37 aces per set. Nist has recorded nine kill/dig double-doubles this year.

The PSAC West Athlete of the Week is Nist’s second of the season and the fifth of her career.

Portis and the Vulcans take on the Clarion Golden Eagles at home on Saturday, with game time set for 3:00. The Vulcans have a tough stretch ahead of them, however, with matchups against IUP, Edinboro, and Slippery Rock still ahead of them on the PSAC West schedule.
