Looking for something to do on a cold winter night?

People usually associate Hollywood blockbuster movies with hot summer days. However, many big films have heated up the box office on cold December nights. Movies such as Avatar, Titanic, I Am Legend, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy have all made their big screen debuts during the holiday season. This season may not have films that can stack up with those previously mentioned, but it will still have movies the whole family can enjoy.

Dec. 9 features two movies that should brighten audience’s spirits. First is New Year’s Eve, featuring a slew of big names. Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Zac Efron, and Sarah Jessica Parker are just a few of the stars in this movie. It is somewhat of a follow up to Valentine’s Day. It goes through different people’s stories the night of New Year’s Eve, and eventually ties them all together by the time they celebrate the New Year. The Sitter also hits theaters Dec. 9. It stars Jonah Hill who is forced to babysit to make some money while he is suspended from college.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows comes out on Dec. 16. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. It is the sequel to the 2009 hit, Sherlock Holmes. This film pits Holmes and Dr. Watson against Professor Moriarty. Dec. 16 will also feature a movie every child will be dying to see this holiday season, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked. This is the third movie of the revamped “Alvin and the Chipmunks” franchise.

On Dec. 23, one of the most anticipated movies of the year will finally hit the big screen, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It is based off the novel series by Stieg Larsson. The film was originally made in Swedish in 2009. Daniel Craig stars as a journalist who is searching for a woman who has been missing for 40 years. Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol is the fourth installment of the series that has been running since 1996. Tom Cruise once again stars as Ethan Hunt.

These are just a few of the movies hitting theaters in the next few weeks. Movies like The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1, The Muppets, and Arthur Christmas have already gotten the holiday movie season into full swing. Looks like those Carmike Cinemas gift certificate booklets will be a popular Christmas present once again.
