Women defeat Mansfield 79-52

The Vulcan women’s basketball team opened up the Convocation Center with a win and a loss. They were able to defeat Mansfield in the very first game on the new floor 79-52; they then fell to Bloomsburg the next day 77-68. The Vulcans are now 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in the PSAC.
Senior guard Danielle Luckett led the Vulcans in the victory over Mansfield by posting a season high 15 points. Sophomore forward Elena Anonenko finished second on the team with 14 points. Three other Vulcans finished in double digit points including senior forward Amy Johns, freshman guard Chelsea McKnight and junior guard Megan Kermond who finished with 11, 10 and 10 points, respectively.
Freshman guard/forward Emma Mahady added eight points; while freshman guard Selena Adamshick added four points and junior guard Stephanie Michael added three. Freshman forward Irina Kukolj and junior forward Alice Abiya rounded out the scoring for the Vulcans with two points each.
McKnight led the rebound effort by pulling down seven (four defensive). Luckett pulled down six rebounds (five defensive) and Antonenko pulled down six more (three defensive). McKnight also led the defense by stealing the ball four times from Mansfield. Mahady and Adamshick both stole the ball two times, while Luckett, sophomore guard Ryah Gadson, Michael, Kermond and Antonenko all added one steal each. Antonenko also added two blocks for the Vulcans in the Victory.
Despite a season high 23 points and Johns first double-double of the season the Vulcans were unable to defeat the Bloomsburg Huskies. Luckett finishes second on the team with 11 points in the loss. Gadson posted a season high 10 points for the Vulcans, while Kermond finished with nine points. Antonenko finished with seven points; Adamshick added four points for the Vulcans. McKnight and Michael round out the scoring by both posting two points each.
Johns led the offense with three assists; Luckett finished second with two assists. Kermond was the only Vulcan to post a block in the loss. Adamshick stole the ball four times to lead the Vulcans, while Luckett and Gadson combined for four steals, three and one, respectively. Johns brought down 11 rebounds (eight defensive) to help propel her to a double-double. Luckett pulled down four rebounds (four defensive) and Mahady captured three more (two defensive).
The Vulcans return to PSAC action today, looking to rebound from the loss, at Kutztown at 4 p.m. They then travel to take on East Stroudsburg tomorrow at 4 p.m. Check the Cal Times for an update on their action after the New Year.
