Mark Swasey has vacated his position as the head women’s basketball coach at California University of Pennsylvania. Swasey became the coach of the Vulcans in June 2009 and posted a 50-19 record during his stay.
“Coach Swasey is leaving Cal U to seek other opportunities,” Christine Kindl, Director of Communications & Public Relations said.
“California University has appointed Jessica Strom to serve as interim head coach for its women’s basketball program,” Kindl said.
Strom has been an assistant coach for the Vulcans since 2006. Before coaching Strom was a four-year starter at Penn State University where she helped them to a 93-38 record. While at Penn State she posted 191 three-points and 310 steals, which ranks her third all time at Penn State.
Strom has numerous awards including three-time All-Big Ten selection and two-time winner of the Tom Caldwell Award, the award is given to the “Unsung Hero” of the Lady Lion basketball team. Strom also holds the single-game record for free throws after going a perfect 15-15 against Minnesota in 2005. Strom is also only one of four players to finish her career with 1,000 points and 750 assists.
“She also has organized the program’s annual high school camp that is offered in July,” Kindl said.
“Cal U is looking forward to an exciting season of women’s basketball with Coach Strom guiding the team,” said Dr. Lenora Angelone, vice president of Student Affairs. “She has proven to be a tremendous asset to our program, and we have great confidence in her leadership and coaching skills.”
While Swasey is gone, Strom has already shown that she lead the Vulcans to victory. Strom helped the Vulcans to a 2-0 start since being named the interim head coach for its women’s basketball program.
The University wishes Swasey best of luck in his future endeavors, Kindl said.

I know Mark Swasey very well–
I’m shocked to hear that he “vacated” his position because he’s both a proven winner and a person who sees things through. If I had to guess [and that's all it would be] the environment at this school had to have been quite poisonous. If I know Mark he will get another head coaching job very quickly and kick Calu’s butt again like he did with Franklin Pierce.
