Safeguarding Your Computer

  • Keep all of your software up to date. Rather than putting off those annoying Microsoft Updates, take the 10 minutes to let them install. Allowing the updates to install keeps your registry clean and prevents problems.
  • Be wary of links messaged to you on Facebook or Twitter. Chances are, if you don't know anything about a video someone posted of you, and the link points to a video away from the social network site, don't click it. These links are generally indicative of a virus. One way to tell if a link is directing you to an unknown site is to hover your cursor over the link (don't click it!) and note the destination in your browser's status bar.
  • Run CCleaner from time to time. This free software for Mac and PC cleans old files from your the operating system and helps your system run more smoothly.
  • Be conscientious about the software you install. Try to verify the source of the software. If it's not from a trustworthy source, it may contain a virus.
  • Keep your computer clean. A dirty computer gets hot faster, degrading the performance of your computer, and shortening its lifespan. A can of compressed air to clean the internals of the computer, Q-tips and some rubbing alcohol to clean the detailed parts, and sanitizing wipes used over the larger smooth surfaces go a long way towards keeping your computer clean and happy.
