In past seasons, Cal women’s rugby team has played different teams outside the ARU. In the spring 2009, the Cal U Women’s Rugby Team traveled to Lancaster PA to participate in the Buggy Bash tournament hosted by Franklin Marshall University. We received 1st place in that tournament, without being scored on, in the DIII division. Teams that we played were Ursinus University, Franklin Marshall, and Salisbury University. Cal also traveled to Penn State University to play their B-side team. Cal lost 20-5 but the experience of playing PSU’s B-side was significant. In the past years at the Pittsburgh City Classic tournaments we have played and beaten various schools such as Kenyon, Lock Haven, Franklin Marshall, Pitt, IUP B-side, Grove City, and WVU B-side. We have finished 3rd in 2007, and 1st place 2008 & 2009.
The California Women’s Rugby team made a name for themselves in DIII, by winning the division two years in a row. They even got a chance to play in the Regional Final in the National Div 3 Women's Collegiate Championship held in Philadelphia, PA. Our opponent was Marist College, the Met NY RU Collegiate D3 Champion. Cal did not win that game, but it was another great learning experience for Cal.
Cal has worked very hard and is very proud to be in DII this year and years to come. As our skill level advances, our numbers have increased and our name within in the University has grown. Cal has a great possibility for advancement, and making a name for themselves throughout the ARU and the Midwest. We were just recently featured in a rugby magazine stating “California (Pa.) has an excellent shot at moving up..." within DII. This shows that Cal is a young team that has great potential, and will continue to succeed.
