Faces
by Beth Anne Luciani
The world is full of faces.
They make up its exterior.
Faces that cover continents
And countries all around the globe.
Faces distinguish ethnicity and culture,
With different colors and shapes.
Some are black, white, red,
Oblong, round, or square.
A smile or a frown,
Winking or blushing;
Emotions can be seen
On faces in every way.
From smooth, pink cheeks of a newborn
To leathery, wrinkled cheeks of a grandfather,
Faces show age and journeys
Beginning or almost ending.
A single face can tell a whole story.
A poor girl with sacks under her eyes,
A rich girl with blue eye shadow;
Two faces with two different lives.
People decide what their faces show.
They either reveal or hide
Happiness or sadness,
The truth or a secret life.
Look in the mirror.
Is that face your own,
Or just a mask,
Your true self or not?
Faces make up the world.
If you look around at the places you go,
You may see the story behind each one,
And the story behind your own.
