Song of a Soldier
by Thomasa Pridgen
Song of the soldier who’s dying for me,
so lonely, homesick, and blue,
alone in a country across the sea,
burdened with a duty to do.
I’ll always remember your bravery,
and I’ll keep on thanking you,
for the special gift you gave to me,
the freedom of the tried and true,
of the red the white and the blue.
Weeks on airplanes or on a boat,
With only picture to keep you afloat.
One phone card here and an e-mail account,
Is the only way to ever reach out.
Finally reach port and relief of land.
Nervous wait for next command.
Little time to enjoy the shore.
Not here for vacation but for war.
Down in the trenches, dirt on your face.
Fighting and killing for the human race.
Head in the battle but heart here at home.
Missing the loved ones left all alone.
Death and destruction, the horrors of war.
Never to be the same as before.
Comrade and friend lying down, dying.
Others grieving, hurting, crying.
A bomb goes off above your head,
You can’t seem to breathe, your best friend is dead.
A bullet hits like a lightning bolt,
Giving the whole body a jolt,
Mind leaves body with the sound of another bomb,
Goes to thoughts of home and mom.
Lying back and shedding a tear,
With you last breath, you say a prayer.
21 years old, left the war cold,
That’s a soldier’s story told. |
